Ms. Isabela Bessa

Visiting PhD Student

BIO

Isabela Alves de Albuquerque Bessa obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (4-year program) from the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), Brazil, in 2020. During her undergraduate studies, she began a research project at the Laboratório de Química Supramolecular e Nanotecnologia, funded by a two-year fellowship from the Rio de Janeiro Research Foundation (FAPERJ). Her project focused on the functionalization of reduced graphene oxide for chemo-photothermal therapy against Leishmaniasis. In 2022, she earned her MSc in Inorganic Chemistry from UFF, where her master’s thesis involved the development of hydroxyapatite nanocrystals integrated into mesoporous silica nanoparticles for sustained drug delivery. Isabela began her PhD studies in 2023 at UFF, focusing on the modulation of physicochemical properties of inorganic nanomaterials to enhance blood–brain barrier translocation via transcytosis mechanisms, aiming to improve therapeutic efficacy against glioblastoma. In October 2025, she joined the Nanomedicine Lab as a Visiting PhD Student for nine months, supported by a fellowship from the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES–Brazil). Her current research explores the complexation of small molecules on graphene oxide for glioblastoma treatment.
