Filipe earned his BSc in Biotechnology at the University of Aveiro, Portugal in 2012. For his final year dissertation, he studied the properties of bacterial cellulose to optimise its use as a potential vehicle for transdermal drug delivery. In 2014, he completed an MSc in Molecular Biotechnology at the same university, after a research project at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, Portugal. There, he focused on developing computational methods to analyse human circular RNA sequences. Filipe was offered a 4-year PhD studentship as part of the GrapheneNOWNANO Centre for Doctoral Training at the University of Manchester, and joined the Nanomedicine Lab in April 2015 to study the impact of graphene-based nanomaterials in the lung.
